Perched on the cliffs of the Hudson Palisades, Weehawken has watched over the river since Henry Hudson anchored in its cove in 1609. Today this compact township pairs a storied past with some of the best skyline views and ferry access anywhere on the water.
About the town
Weehawken sits atop and beneath the Hudson Palisades, directly across the river from Midtown Manhattan. Its small footprint holds an outsized transportation role and one of the most photographed views in the metro area.
Weehawken is part of New Jersey’s Gold Coast, along the Hudson.
Our history
1804
On July 11, 1804, Alexander Hamilton and Vice President Aaron Burr faced off on a ledge below the Palisades — the Weehawken dueling grounds. Hamilton was mortally wounded; the site is marked today by a monument and Hamilton Park.
1859
Weehawken was formed as a township by the New Jersey Legislature on March 15, 1859, carved from portions of Hoboken and North Bergen.
1937
The Weehawken approach to the Lincoln Tunnel was contracted in 1937; the resulting helix — an oval viaduct linking the Palisades crest to the toll plaza — opened the next year and remains a feat of regional engineering.
Signature landmark
Boulevard East traces the top of the Palisades with a protected, unbroken view of the Hudson and the Manhattan skyline, from the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge to the George Washington Bridge. Just below sits the Weehawken dueling grounds, where the 1804 Hamilton–Burr duel took place, now marked by a bronze monument and Hamilton Park.
Community & culture
Port Imperial's ferry terminal, opened in 2006 on former banana docks, keeps Weehawken tied to Manhattan by water — as it has been since ferry service began around 1700.
Weehawken packs riverfront parks, staircase streets, and bluff-top blocks into under a mile and a half, ranking among the most densely populated municipalities in the country.
From jazz pianist Thelonious Monk to choreographer Jerome Robbins, Weehawken's riverfront views have long drawn creative and civic figures who called the township home.
