North Bergen — built on hills, home to Havana on the Hudson

“A township built on hills.”

Rising from the Hudson waterfront to the top of the Palisades, North Bergen has grown for nearly two centuries into one of Hudson County's largest townships. From its hillside streets to its bustling avenues, it's a community shaped by immigration, resilience, and remarkable views.

About the town

A township built on hills

North Bergen sits atop the Hudson Palisades, where a steep cuesta gives the township one of the most dramatic street grids in the country. It's one of the hilliest municipalities in the United States, with neighborhoods carrying names like Woodcliff, Bergenwood, and Bulls Ferry.

  • Situated on the Palisades — often cited as having the second-most hills per square mile in the U.S. after San Francisco
  • Tonnelle Avenue (US 1/9) and the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail's northern terminus connect it across the county
  • Among the more densely populated municipalities in the country, with 63,000+ residents in 5.57 square miles

Our history

The story of North Bergen

1843

A township is born

On April 10, 1843, North Bergen was incorporated by the New Jersey Legislature from the northern portion of Bergen Township — originally a vast area reaching nearly to today's Journal Square.

1843–1900

A shrinking map, a defined identity

Over the decades North Bergen's original territory gave rise to Hoboken, West New York, part of Union City, and others. Secaucus was the last to separate, in 1900, setting today's boundaries.

1935

A local hero's historic upset

While living in North Bergen, boxer James J. Braddock won the world heavyweight title in one of the greatest upsets in boxing history — the Depression-era story later told in Cinderella Man.

Signature landmark

James J. Braddock Park

Originally North Hudson Park, this Hudson County park was renamed for North Bergen's own James J. Braddock, the world heavyweight champion who lived in the township. A bronze statue of Braddock stands in the park, not far from where he once lived and trained.

★ Braddock lived in North Bergen for the rest of his life after his title win, until his death in 1974.

Community & culture

What makes North Bergen unique

Havana on the Hudson

Beginning in the 1960s, waves of Cuban and other Spanish-speaking émigrés reshaped North Bergen's culture and commerce, part of the region's enduring "Havana on the Hudson" identity.

Bergenline Avenue

Often described as the longest commercial avenue in the state, Bergenline Avenue runs through North Bergen with hundreds of retail stores and restaurants along its route.

The NoHu arts community

In the late 2000s North Bergen and its North Hudson neighbors became known as "NoHu," a haven for performing and fine artists drawn by housing more affordable than nearby Hoboken or Jersey City.
