About the town
Jersey City is New Jersey's second-most-populous city and the seat of Hudson County, sitting directly across the Hudson River from Lower Manhattan. Its waterfront skyline, deep immigration history, and standing as one of the nation's most diverse cities give it a character all its own.

Our history
1838
After earlier incorporations in 1820 and 1829, Jersey City was reincorporated on February 22, 1838, becoming fully independent and taking its present name.
1892–1954
The Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal — now in Liberty State Park — carried immigrants arriving via Ellis Island onward into America, part of the journey for millions of new arrivals.
1917–1947
Mayor Frank Hague led the city for three decades, a period that produced landmarks including Journal Square, the Pulaski Skyway, and the Jersey City Medical Center.
Signature landmark
Facing the Hudson near Exchange Place, this 50-foot octagonal clock has watched over the Jersey City waterfront since 1924, its shape inspired by a bar of Colgate's Octagon Soap. It remains one of the city's most recognized symbols.
Community & culture
The Exchange Place district earned its nickname from the concentration of major financial firms occupying towers along the waterfront skyline.
This 1,200-acre waterfront park, opened in 1976, is the only place in New Jersey offering ferry service to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
With large Asian, Hispanic, Black, and white populations and dozens of languages spoken at home, Jersey City is regularly ranked among the most diverse cities in the country.
