Perched atop the Hudson Palisades with the Manhattan skyline as its backdrop, Guttenberg packs an entire town's worth of life, food, and history into two-tenths of a square mile. It is, by U.S. Census measure, the most densely populated incorporated municipality in the United States — and proud of every inch.
About the town
Guttenberg is only four blocks wide from north to south, bordered by Kennedy Boulevard to the west and the Hudson River to the east. Within that tiny footprint lives a community where roughly one in five residents calls the towering Galaxy complex home.

Our history
1853
Farmland once worked by William Cooper was bought by New Yorkers who formed the Weehawken Land and Ferry Association, subdividing lots largely for German immigrant families.
1859
Guttenberg was formed as a town on March 9, 1859, carved from portions of North Bergen Township.
1878
After a period within Union Township, Guttenberg became a fully independent municipality on April 1, 1878, and has governed itself ever since.
Signature landmark
Rising 415 feet along Boulevard East, the three octagonal Galaxy Towers were built in the late 1970s with sweeping, unobstructed views of the Manhattan skyline across the Hudson. Their 1,075 apartments make them the defining feature of the town's skyline.
Community & culture
This commercial spine runs straight through town as part of the five-mile corridor known as the heart of "Havana on the Hudson," lined with delis, bakeries, and family storefronts.
More than three-quarters of residents speak a language other than English at home, and roughly half are foreign-born — generations of immigrants who made this small town their first American address.
With almost no room to spread out, community life happens in close quarters — in high-rise hallways, on the Boulevard East promenade, and along the Bergenline storefronts steps from home.
