“Home of the Meadowlands.”
Tucked beside the Passaic and Hackensack Rivers, East Rutherford is a compact Bergen County borough that punches far above its size. It's home to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, MetLife Stadium, and the American Dream complex — putting this small town at the center of the world's biggest stages.
About the town
East Rutherford sits in the Passaic and Hackensack River valley within the Meadowlands district. Despite its small footprint, the borough anchors the Meadowlands Sports Complex — one of the most recognized sports and entertainment destinations in the country.
East Rutherford is part of New Jersey’s Gold Coast, along the Hudson.
Our history
1889
An act of the New Jersey Legislature on April 17, 1889 incorporated a portion of old Union Township as Boiling Springs Township, named for a local spring.
1894
Following a referendum, the Borough of East Rutherford was created on March 28, 1894 — part of the "Boroughitis" wave that formed 26 Bergen County boroughs that year.
1976–2010
Giants Stadium opened in the Meadowlands in 1976, hosting the NY Giants and NY Jets for decades before its 2010 demolition made way for MetLife Stadium.
Signature landmark
East Rutherford is home to the Meadowlands Sports Complex, including MetLife Stadium — shared home of the NFL's Giants and Jets. In 2024, FIFA named MetLife Stadium the host of the 2026 World Cup Final, placing this small borough at the center of the world's biggest sporting event.
Community & culture
The American Dream mall and entertainment complex, opened in phases from 2019, brought retail, an indoor ski slope, and an amusement park to the Meadowlands beside the sports complex.
The borough's Paterson Avenue corridor is its everyday downtown, lined with local restaurants and small businesses that give East Rutherford its neighborhood feel just minutes from the stadium lights.
Beyond today's MetLife Stadium, the borough's land also hosted the original Giants Stadium and the Meadowlands Arena — decades of concerts, championships, and civic memory.
